Tips and Techniques for Tying Traditional Steelhead Flies and with Nate Gubbins.

Nate grew up around the Coon Rapids Dam and got in to fishing early. Being one of the generation coming from “the movie” Nate first picked up an old glass fly rod when he was 11, taught himself to cast (ask him about dancing in his bedroom) and has been at it ever since. Nate recently moved back home after being away for 15 years for school and the first stages of his career, and now fishes whenever he can – which isn’t nearly enough. Nate became intrigued with salmon and steelhead flies very early in his tying, in fact was tying married wings before tying hair bugs! In addition to flyfishing and tying, Nate also builds his own rods, including starting bamboo very soon, and enjoys the art of photography for capturing it all.

For an overview, I’ll go over a number of winging styles and tips for keeping the appearance right (which really is the hardest part), a few basic patterns, proportions, some interesting materials, and I’ll have a few of my books there to page through. In addition to demonstrating as much as I can.

May 30th Meeting Moved to Keller Lake at 6:00

Please note: Due to schedule conflicts, there will be no meeting or tying on May 30th at Gulden’s.

Instead, the Club has decided to have its meeting at the Keller Lake Park Island. This isn’t an official outing, but show up and practice your casting skills, or fish for small panfish and bass, or just hangout. Rumor has it that there are a few musky in the lake too.

Details need to be worked out, but we won’t be paying to reserve a spot, so the exact location may need to move a bit. This is definitely a BYOB affair. Boats not furnished, but the shoreline is good.
