About the St. Paul Fly Tiers
We are a non-profit organization dedicated to sharing the camaraderie that our sport embodies. The club is composed of many great people from many different walks of life who share the common bond of fly tying (or the desire to learn) and fishing with the fly.
Many of our members are master fly tiers. You can hone your skills and learn from the best, while sharing your thoughts and ideas with others. Our club strives to be innovative and educational by giving fly tying demonstrations and instruction at local youth events, trade shows, and community education.
:: Our Members
Our members come from all walks of life, but at the tying table we’re all just . . . . friends. Whatever your favorite species–trout, steelhead, bass, pike, muskie, panfish, or salmon, you’ll find kindred spirits here. Beginners and experts alike share their tying tribulations and talents, and the fastest way for the former to become the latter is to come, ask questions, and watch. Members are legendary for their patience and generosity–and bad puns. When you walk through the door, just head for the laughter downstairs.
:: Activities
We present programs at the first meeting of the month from September through May. Local and national experts present on such diverse topics as: fly tying, fly casting, stewardship of the land and water, entomology, trip & outfitter programs, and how to double the length of that fish you caught when no one was looking.
We also support local fly fishing events, education, and conservation efforts. Members have turned out in recent years to volunteer their time and materials at school programs and county fairs, stream clean-ups, public programs such as the Great Waters Fly Fishing Expo and Northwest Sportsman’s Show. Also on behalf of the Kinnickinnic River Land Trust in River Falls, Wisconsin and Trout Unlimited.
Our goal, as always, is to promote conservation of our natural resources. We wade, float, boat, and pontoon locally, –even nationally. Our many outings during the year wrap a day of fishing around a great mid-day meal prepared and shared by our members. So whether you’ve fly-fished for decades, or just wondered what all the fuss is about, visiting our meetings can’t help but make you smile, bad puns not withstanding.
